Sand Floor Before Polyurathane
If you don t sand the floors first the stain won t properly penetrate the hardwood nor will the polyurethane properly adhere.
Sand floor before polyurathane. Don t finish on the same day you sand. Before the finishing starts i vacuum the project the workbench and the floor. For a smooth coating you ll want the surface to be as smooth as possible so prepare the wood by sanding it with a sanding block or orbital sander. As with all wood finishes good results depend on smooth clean wood surfaces but this goes double with clear finishes such as polyurethane.
If you attempt to add stain on top of floor without sanding it expect it to peel off. Start with 120 grit sandpaper on refinished pieces and 80 grit on new wood. Sand polyurethane lightly between coats with 220 or higher grit sandpaper. You ll get the best results from your topcoat if you remove any old paint varnish or other finishes before polyurethane application.
I ll reuse these sheets several times then toss them. Final coat do not sand the last coat of polyurethane varnish. Lightly sand with a dull 120 to 150 grit abrasive screen or 2 steel wool under a heavy floor buffer. Yes a polyurethane finished hardwood floor may have additional coats of polyurethane applied.
Hand sand corners edges and under cabinet kick plates. Just kidding but i truly do hate sanding when i don t have to. The first coat needs the most sanding to appear smooth. You can save thousands of dollars by adding this.
This is the only way to change the color of your hardwood floors. Always allow polyurethane to dry 24 to 48 hours before sanding to give the surface time to cure and harden. Under the piece to be finished i spread out 6 mil poly to protect the floor from drips and spills and make cleanup easy. To give the subsequent poly layers something to bond to sand lightly between coats with 320 grit sandpaper wrapped around a hard block.
Don t worry if it doesn t look as flawless as you d like at first. Sand your wood with at least 220 grit sandpaper. Sucks to be you. Refinishing sanding staining polyurethane for hardwood oak floors.
For the smoothest finish wipe the surface with a sticky tack cloth before adding another coat. You should see a fine white powder after sanding if not allow it to dry longer between coats. And now you ll have to sand the entire floor with 220 grit sand paper and clean all the dust up. Oak hardwood floors wear well and look their best when properly refinished.
After the third coat sand with 320 grit then 400 and finally 600 grit sandpaper. The dust stays in the air.
